Giant Tortoise species thought to be extinct are discovered on Island Floreana

Galápagos experts find a tortoise related to Lonesome George

Giant Tortoise species thought to be extinct are discovered on Island Floreana, with one partially linked to Lonesome George – a Pinta Island Giant Tortoise. Lonesome George was thought to be the last of his kind, and after years of failed attempts to breed, he passed away in 2012. However, a flame of hope is now rekindled, as 30 tortoises are found on Floreana Island, some of which are species that were thought to be extinct, while one female tortoise is found to be partially related to Lonesome George!
