“Whoever wants to see how God created earth must travel to Ecuador” -Zeit Reisen
(German Newspaper review on Ecuador’s Amazon region)
The Yasuni National Park located in the eastern part of Ecuador is home to million species of animals and plants. This fantastic spot on earth has one of the highest biodiversity in the world. The Amazon rainforest and cloud forest is indeed a piece of heaven on earth.
The eastern region of Ecuador is around 132,000 km², and it belongs to the Amazon lowlands. However, it only constitutes 1.6% of the entire Amazon basin. In comparison to other countries in the region, the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador is considered to be well preserved. Several indigenous communities call the Rainforest their home and they are protective of their land against foreign influences. If it weren’t for the vast oil reserves under the Amazon lowlands, the communities and nature of the Amazon would almost be untouched. Unfortunately, the oil industry has stirred up several environmental scandals in the region in the last decade, and Ecuador is equally dependent economically on the oil reserves.
Nevertheless, the Amazon Rainforest is still a terrific and breathtaking place that you must experience for yourself at least once in your lifetime and with the right Amazon rainforest lodges, you are set for an adventure you will never forget!
A unique spot bursting with biodiversity
In Yasuni National Park, there are over 2,274 species of trees and bushes, and up to 644 species can be identified within a single hectare, which is more than all native tree species in the United States and Canada combined. Needless to say, it has by far, the largest number of tree species per hectare.
Besides trees, the number of fauna species living here is also astounding – with at least 593 species of birds, 80 species of birds,150 amphibian and 121 reptile species, and more than 4,000 different vascular plants per 1,000,000 hectares. You wouldn’t find anywhere else on the planet with more species of insects than the Yasuni National Park. It is estimated that 100,000 species can be found per hectare. Many endemic flora and fauna species also thrive here. For more information, book a free non-binding consultation phone appointment with us here!
Different ways to explore the region with the perfect Amazon rainforest lodges
1) For budget travellers and backpackers, we would suggest the Amazon lowlands along the eastern tangents from Tena to Maca. There you will find beautiful Amazon rainforest lodges as you visit the small harbour of Misuahuali at River Napo. Alternatively, you can also visit the indigenous Shuar community TAWASAP in Palora with us. They have one of the best reforestation programmes in the region.
2) For the ultimate rainforest experience, you can visit the Yasuni or Cuyabeno National park through Coca or Lago Agrio (Nueva Loja). The concrete streets of the city end here as the river basin begins. Secluded lodges await your stay in the Yasuni National park, while there are more going on at the Cuyabeno National park. We would gladly advise you on the most suitable lodge based on your needs and wishes.
3) Last but not least, we offer two Amazon river cruises, the Manatee and the Anaconda which travel on River Napo. Both cruises sail to the Peruvian borders where you can explore the nature and wildlife of the rainforest in luxury.
The lodges in the Ecuador Amazon Cloud and rainforest offer packages ranging from 2 to 5 days. They usually include overnight accommodations, meals, and excursions with an English speaking nature guide.
