The Avenue of Volcanoes in Ecuador
Volcanic activity formed the northern highlands of Ecuador. The highest mountain in Ecuador, Chimborazo, and the world’s highest active volcano, Cotopaxi are located there. They are 6,310 m and 5,807 m respectively. Ecuador is a popular destination for mountain climbers and hikers, and they are considered to be a rather easy climb. In the Andes Highlands, there are around 22 mountains above 3,500 m, of which 9 are active volcanoes.
In the southern part, there are also large watershed areas without any volcanic activity. Areas above 2000 m enjoy a cold temperate climate.
All mountain climbing expeditions and trips to places exceeding 3500 m should ideally be accompanied by a mountain climbing expert or tour guide. This is because not all trails are well paved or marked out. It is also important to have someone who can offer expert assistance should anyone experience mountain sickness.
